New Friars

Many in the younger generation now entering the "real world" are passing on the pattern of this world, of career, corporate ladder and retirement plans. These are instead choosing to serve the poor and downcast in remote areas around the world. They are feeding the poor and hungry, and helping the widows and orphans. They are planting seeds and doing the work for a far greater harvest.

Scott Bessenecker wrote a book titled The New Friars that talks about some of these on the front line. As the book says, "our love for God must translate into love for them."

I wrote briefly about Erin, a new friar I know, in my post ,What is Your Pattern?.

It's not only the young, but also the retired as well. More retirees than ever are deciding to spend their later years in a full-time service for Him. Golf courses and day-trips versus working with the poor and in prison.

I encourage you, whether young or old or in the middle, to be a new friar. There is so much work yet to be done, and so few workers in the field.

Remember- every day we build either things that are temporal, or things that are eternal.
